Tung Chung
Tung Chung, the largest residential town on Lantau Island, is situated close to Chep Lap Kok, Hong Kong International Airport.
Originally a major defence stronghold against pirates and invading navies, it boasts an old fort, complete with cannons, and several temples. Primarily a fishing village, Tung Chung is now a metropolis of high-rise buildings and shopping malls. Since the airport re-location was announced, many large high-rise developments have proliferated here, together with a small number of new houses and an increasing number of local, village houses at the periphery. Rents are generally more reasonable than on Hong Kong Island, and it is a convenient location for frequent travellers.
The MTR rail link takes less than 30 minutes to Central, with connection to other districts along the Tung Chung-Central line.
Twenty-five routes operated by two bus companies serve the area. Citybus operates 13 of the routes and Long Win, a wholly owned subsidiary of Kowloon Motor Bus, operates another 12 routes.
The airport is connected by a frequent bus service "S1" operated by the two companies.
A ferry runs to and from Tuen Mun in the New Territories and another goes along the north Lantau coast to the picturesque village of Tai O, the point furthest West in the SAR.
The latest development is a road bridge across the Pearl River Estuary to Macau and Zuhai, mainly for commercial use, with limited private car permits allowed, however there are frequent public bus services.
There are several pre-school options, the main English speaking ones being Discovery Mind Kindergarten which also covers primary school years, Sunshine House Pre-school, Greenfields and the Tung Chung English School Foundation Kindergarten. For secondary education The large YMCA school has a good reputation.
There is also a regular bus link of about 20 minutes duration that connects to Discovery Bay with alternative school options.
There are several individual doctors’ practices in Tung Chung, most of whom will speak a good level of English; the two main clinics are Quality Health Care Medical Centre and Human Health Medical Centre.
In 2013, the new government North Lantau hospital opened, however, due to an acute shortage of medical staff, it offers a limited service of outpatient clinics. There is a 24 hour accident and emergency service and the X-ray department is fully equipped and efficient, so most accidents can be dealt with directly – more serious injuries will be sent by ambulance to Princess Margaret Hospital in Kwai Chung.
There is a large shopping mall, Citygate, with international clothes and shoe outlets, food hall and a large supermarket. It is linked to the Novotel Hotel. Be aware that it does get very busy with visiting tourists at the weekend. Nearby in a more local mall are more restaurant options and another supermarket. The main residential developments also offer shops and restaurant facilities.
Several of the developments have basic sports facilities such as swimming pools, gyms and playgrounds; there is a large public swimming pool by the MTR station and a municipal sports facility at Man Tung Road Sports Centre with sports halls, table tennis, a large gym and an indoor childrens’ playroom.
There are good hiking trails up into the hills behind, or take a bus over to the glorious trails and beaches on the South side of Lantau Island. There are beautiful temples dotted in the hills and the fishing port of Tai O is well worth a visit – there is a weekend ferry service there from Tung Chung, or it is a pleasant coastal hike.
There is a cable-car linking Tung Chung to the Main Buddhist Temple on the Island at Ngong Ping, which sits just under Lantau Peak, the highest point on Lantau Island at 934m – quite a hike from sea level, but worth it on a clear day.
Nearby is Hong Kong’s Disneyland at Sunny Bay. There is also a regular bus link of about 20 minutes duration that connects to Discovery Bay, which is a beautiful residential island with a lovely beach, bars and restaurants.
